The Question: Does The Bible Offer Financial Advice?
Money Answer Guy’s Answer: Take some time, grab a bible and open to the book of proverbs. You will be amazed at the amount of wisdom God has to say about money. One verse says, “In the house of the wise, there are stores of choices grains and oils. Only a fool consumes all he has!” God actually tells us we should have savings! Another verse in Proverbs states, “The borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7a). Another interesting note in the Bible is that God never used debt give a blessing to his people. Many Christians are starting to realize that God has already written our financial plan, and it does not involve borrowing money!
Being in debt is not a salvation issue. You are not going to hell if you owe money, but God does want what’s best for us! All of us who are believers in Christ should like to follow His ways as best as we can. Many of us agree that getting out of any debts we owe is the way to go and we should follow God’s teachings in finance, but how does one accomplish this?
There are three major areas which should be addressed. You have to have the right priorities. God tells us in Proverbs 6 that when you are in debt you should escape it like a gazelle does with a lion. This does not mean you should kind of sort of maybe thinking about paying on some of your bills next week perhaps, it means you should work as you possibly can fast and as hard as you can until you are done with debt.
Spending too much money and spending money on the wrong things is another area that God mentions in the Bible. The Word states, “only a fool devours all he has.” Who would have thought that God might not want us to live paycheck to paycheck? We need to quit spending so much money on ourselves so that we actually have money to pay on our debts. This freed-up income will do wonders in helping you pay down any liabilities that you might have.
God also tells us that we should work! There are numerous passages in the bible which condemn the lazy. We are also told in the New Testament that “The man who does not work does not eat.” God wants us to be productive! He wants us to work hard so we can have resources to do His divine work.
If you follow God’s principles when it comes to money, he will give you a lot more of it. This can never be proven true statistically, but it is true. If God can trust us with small amounts of money, surely He will give us more of His money to be good stewards of!
A lot of these principles are basic and you should know them. The problem is not that of knowledge is not enough, changing one’s behavior and taking action is what is needed. Everyone knows they should shove less food in their mouth to lose weight, but America is the fattest country in the world. The Lord tells us to be wise with His money, and we need to listen to Him so that we have the money to tithe, support or local churches and be able to be very very generous with the riches that God blesses us!
