Another trip to the supermarket reveals higher prices on products across the board. It seems that everything has gone up. The budget is straining to keep up. So, smart grocery shoppers look for ways to cut back. Here is how they are performing that task:
Buy non-brand name products. While this is not an earth-shattering thing, it has been so ingrained in our minds to buy that certain name brand item that it is difficult to depart from the practice. Yet, the fact is that private-labels (as they are called) are so close in quality that one can hardly tell the difference. And sometimes the taste is better so this is all the more reason to look to these names for food items. While the difference in price is often under a dollar, when added up, it can have a positive impact in savings on the grocery bill total.
Be a Coupon Cutter. Yes, they can be a nightmare to manage, but when mastered, the art of coupon-shopping can yield a lower total at the register nonetheless. The only caveat here is to watch the price of the item on the coupon. If it does not lower the cost significantly or at least in line with the private-labeled items, it might not be a worthwhile endeavor for that item.
Ask to Match the Price. Some stores and big-box retailers have a price matching guarantee. Use that to your advantage to help lower your overall bill. Just be sure you bring in a copy of the competitors ad for verification purposes.
Comparison Shop. While it is not wise to drive to one store to check prices only to have to drive to the other to make sure you are getting the best deal, you do have options to check prices before you head out. First, check the ads and circulars in your local paper. You can quickly get an idea of what is out there at what price. Next, know the stores in which you shop. Most have a reputation of being lower on some items and higher on others. Finally, talk to family members and friends about their experiences with prices. They might still have their receipts from their last shopping trip and be willing to share the prices with you.
Think different about storing food for long-term purposes. The locking zip type bags can get expensive, so try to buy containers that you can re-use over and over. This helps keep these plastic baggies out of the dumps which helps the environment, too.
Try these suggestions and see how much lower your overall grocery bill is the next time you venture out. You will be pleasantly surprised.
